Lazio are edging ever closer to securing the services of Dutch centre-back Danilho Doekhi on a free transfer.
The Biancocelesti are searching the market for new defenders after parting ways with Mario Gila, who signed for AC Milan, and Alessio Romagnoli, who should soon finalize his transfer to Al-Sadd. But while Sergi Dominguez has been identified as the primary target to bolster the backline, reports from Italy and the Netherlands revealed on Sunday that the club opened talks with Doekhi.
The 28-year-old is a Rotterdam native who had a spell at Ajax as a youngster and then went on to make a name for himself at Vitesse. The Dutchman spent four years at Union Berlin, but recently ended his German experience after seeing out his contract with the club, similar to his former teammate, Diogo Leite, who is also on Lazio’s shortlist.
On Monday, Italian journalists Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto revealed that Doekhi will soon land in Rome to conclude talks with the Biancocelesti and sign for the club. He would become Lazio’s second signing of the summer after Alfonso Pedraza, although the Spanish full-back had penned a pre-agreement contract in the winter.
Romano notes that the deal hasn’t been closed just yet, but he expects to hand his trademark ‘here we go’ soon enough, signalling that the transfer is now a matter of time.
Sky Sport Italia correspondent Gianluca Di Marzio also weighs in on the story, revealing that a meeting between Lazio and Doekhi will take place on Monday to sort out the remaining details.
The famous Italian journalist insists that the Dutch defender’s arrival won’t rule out a deal for Dominguez, as the Aquile could acquire two centre-backs after losing Romagnoli and Gila.
