Ex-Corinthians player assaulted by police after Campeonato Paranaense match

On the night of last Monday (19), former player Perdigão, who played for Corinthians, issued a statement condemning the actions of a military police officer at a football match. He was assaulted while leaving the match between São Joseense and Operário at Vila Capanema. The incident occurred on Sunday at Vila Capanema, in the capital of Paraná.

Perdigão played for Corinthians in 2008, where he competed in the Série B and was a runner-up in the Copa do Brasil with the club. He also played for Athletico-PR, Vasco da Gama, and Internacional, where he was a Club World Cup champion. He highlighted on social media that this was an “extremely embarrassing situation.”

“An extremely embarrassing and painful situation I experienced this weekend. I was cowardly assaulted by an unprepared member of the Military Police. It is regrettable that an isolated action like this tarnishes the image of an institution that should exist to protect citizens,” wrote the former player, who posted the video and images of the assault.

“At that moment, I approached a police officer just to greet him, congratulate him on his service, and wish him a good night. I don’t know if there was any misunderstanding, but suddenly and without any justification, he came towards me, assaulting me with a baton,” he added.

At 48 years old, he participates in a program promoted by the Paraná Football Federation (FPF). “Since the beginning of the current administration, Perdigão has regularly participated as a commentator on the De Primeira program on the Federation’s YouTube channel, being a constant figure on our social networks and building a relationship of respect and friendship with everyone. We will follow the developments with the necessary attention, certain that football and violence do not mix,” defended the entity.

Perdigão also said that he tried to distance himself from the aggression to avoid further confusion and that he was not rude to the officers. The Paraná Military Police have not yet commented on the case.
