Former Argentina international Juan Sebastian Veron trusts Lazio can challenge Inter Milan and other Serie A giants for the title this term.
During his recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, the ex-midfielder discussed Biancocelesti’s Scudetto ambitions.
However, Veron is adamant Marco Baroni’s men are behind defending champions Inter and several other teams in the pecking order.
Simone Inzaghi’s team entered the new campaign as clear-cut favorites to reclaim the title.
But Napoli’s resurrection under Antonio Conte has spoiled their plans.
Moreover, Juventus have reigned supreme under Thiago Motta.
In the meantime, Atalanta, Fiorentina, and Lazio are going from strength to strength.
They’ve amassed as many points as Inter (25) after the opening 12 rounds, a haul only bettered by Napoli’s 26.
Despite remaining the only unbeaten Serie A side, Juventus sit in sixth due to a high volume of draws.
“I closely follow the developments of the league, and I notice that this year there is great balance,” Veron said.
“Many teams are within just a few points at the top of the standings.
“Among them, Lazio. I see no reason why they shouldn’t think about being able to reach the title.
Veron concedes other title candidates are better equipped than Lazio.
However, he insists the best teams don’t always lift trophies.
“Okay, but let’s remember that the strongest don’t always win.
“Inter, Napoli, Milan, Juventus, and Atalanta may have something more from a technical standpoint.
“But this Lazio enjoys playing football, and I wouldn’t overlook that detail.”
Serie A hasn’t been this competitive at this point in the season for quite some time.
Inter will likely have to go above and beyond to defend the Scudetto.
They could’ve returned to the top last weekend, only for Hakan Calhanoglu to waste a penalty in a 1-1 draw against Napoli.
