Ian Poveda, 26, has been banned from driving for six months after admitting speeding at around 100mph in a 70mph zone.

He was stopped on the A184 in South Tyneside at about 8.45am on Sunday 23 February 2025 while a Sunderland player, after an officer saw his black Range Rover accelerate away, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.

Poveda pulled over immediately when signalled to stop. He did not attend the hearing at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court. The prosecutor told the court the vehicle was clearly well above the limit and estimated at about 100mph in a 70mph area.

His lawyer said the speeding occurred only for a very short period. At the time he already had nine points on his licence from three previous speeding offences, the court heard.

Magistrates added another six points and imposed a six-month ban under the totting up procedure. He was fined £800, plus a £320 surcharge and £600 costs after admitting the offence.

The winger previously played for Leeds in the Premier League and made 25 appearances across four seasons.
