Ian Poveda has been banned from driving for six months after speeding at about 100mph in a 70mph zone.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 26-year-old was a Sunderland player when a police officer saw his black Range Rover on the A184 in South Tyneside at around 8.45am on Sunday 23 February 2025.

He did not attend North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court. Prosecutor Brian Payne said the officer watched the vehicle accelerate well above the limit and estimated the speed at roughly 100mph in a 70mph area. The officer signalled for it to stop and Poveda pulled over immediately.

The court heard he already had nine points on his licence from three earlier speeding offences. Magistrates added another six points, triggering a six-month ban under the totting up procedure.

After admitting the offence, he was fined £800, with a £320 surcharge and £600 in costs. Defence lawyer Janice Hall said the speeding lasted only a very short time.

The London-born Colombia international made 25 Premier League appearances for Leeds across four seasons. He left Sunderland last month and has signed for Internacional de Bogota.
