Behind the scenes of the split between Rhulani Mokwena and MC Alger

The adventure of South African coach Rhulani Mokwena with MC Alger was short-lived.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns boss reached an agreement with the club's management to terminate his contract, which was initially set to run until June 30, 2027.
The Johannesburg native will continue his career with Libyan side Al-Ittihad Tripoli, after two previous spells in North Africa with Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) and Mouloudia Club Alger (MCA).
According to sources close to the Algerian capital club, Rhulani Mokwena was disappointed by the lack of cooperation from the club's management, which failed to respond positively to his repeated requests to strengthen the squad with two new signings during the last winter transfer window, ahead of the group stage of the CAF Champions League 2025-2026.
After the defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns and the elimination from African competition, he instructed his agent to seek new opportunities, especially since he could terminate his contract by paying two months' salary as compensation.
Ultimately, he reached an agreement with Libyan side Al-Ittihad Tripoli, who offered him a salary of $80,000—almost triple what he was earning at MC Alger.
In summary, Rhulani Mokwena was frustrated by the lack of professionalism from the Algerian club's management, which pushed him to walk away, even though the Libyan club's offer was hard to turn down.
In 34 matches at the helm of the reigning Algerian champions, the South African coach racked up 20 wins, 8 draws, and 6 defeats. Under his leadership, the capital club scored 41 goals and conceded 19.
