Enzo Fernandez is going to be offered a “record breaking” new contract according to some insiders, but we have our doubts.

After a bruising defeat at home to PSG, the last thing Chelsea needed was more bad news. Well, literally minutes after the team trudged off the pitch, they got it.

Enzo Fernandez decided that was the right moment to cast doubt on his future, saying “we’ll see” when asked if he would be at the club next season. It’s led to a lot of speculation – who would want him? How much would they pay? Would Chelsea let him go?

Today, an exclusive from Graeme Bailey makes it clear that the club aren’t going to let him go without a fight. Fernandez is already on a very long contract, and Chelsea are apparently willing to give him a “record destroying new contract.”

Record breaking contract news smells fishy

This sounds like nonsense, for a few reasons. For one, Fernandez has so much time on his current deal that Chelsea really are under no pressure to give him a new one. It already feels unlikely that a club offer us what we want for him as a transfer fee (£80m+), so apart from keeping Enzo happy, there’s no reason to do it.

If the club’s model is to offer long deals with low wages, there’s no way they will allow themselves to be held to ransom so easily by a player with so little leverage.
