Jack Wilshere is set to be appointed imminently as Luton Town's head coach with another ex-Arsenal figure to join, Football League World understands
Jack Wilshere is set to be joined by another former Arsenal favourite in Steve Bould as he prepares to take the Luton Town job to replace Matt Bloomfield at Kenilworth Road, Football League World has been exclusively informed.
Luton made the decision to part ways with Bloomfield last week following an inconsistent start to the 2025/26 League One campaign, despite only appointing the ex-Wycombe Wanderers boss back in January on a three-and-a-half year contract.
However, Bloomfield failed to keep Luton in the Championship last season and the Hatters endured disappointing third-tier form under his stewardship after suffering consecutive relegations from the Premier League to League One.
Consistency was a real issue under Bloomfield, with Luton winning five, losing five and drawing one of their opening 11 league encounters.
A steady start to life back in League One was undermined by patchy form throughout September and into October, with a 2-0 defeat to local rivals and league leaders Stevenage at the start of this month ultimately forcing Luton to elect change after scrutiny had begun to intensify on Bloomfield following the previous month's 3-1 loss to Lincoln City and a 2-2 draw at lowly Blackpool - in which Town's blushes were only spared by two late goals to salvage a point.
Luton have wasted little time in replacing Bloomfield, however, with the Hatters set to have his replacement in charge ahead of next weekend's return to action against Mansfield Town.
On Friday afternoon, Football League World exclusively revealed a three-man Luton managerial shortlist consisting of Wilshere, Leyton Orient's Richie Wellens and ex-Swansea City head coach Luke Williams, though it was the former who would swiftly emerge as a leading contender to take over from Bloomfield.
The following day, it was reported that Wilshere was closing in on the vacant position at Luton.
Now, Football League World has been exclusively informed that the 34-cap former England international has accepted the job and is set to take his first training session as early as tomorrow.
FLW also understands that Wilshere will be joined by Steve Bould, with the ex-Arsenal defender poised to join his coaching staff at Luton. Much like Wilshere, Bould spent the bulk of his playing career with the North London outfit before transitioning to coaching, and spent extensive time in charge of the Gunners' academy system.
Bould left the Emirates Stadium in May 2021 but has remained in the coaching sphere since and joined Championship side QPR as head of defensive coaching and first-team coach in June of this year.
Wilshere is closing in on what will represent his first senior, permanent managerial role after turning his efforts to coaching in the immediate aftermath of his July 2022 retirement from a distinguished, albeit injury-plagued playing career, which saw him register more than 200 appearances for Arsenal and earn recognition as one of English football's most prodigious and talented central midfielders.
The now-33-year-old spent more than two years working as the head coach of Arsenal's under-18 side before leaving the Gunners to take up a first-team coaching role with Norwich City last October.
Following the sacking of Johannes Hoff Thorup, Wilshere was appointed in charge on an interim basis for the Canaries' final two matches of the 2024/25 Championship season, in which they played out a 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough and triumphed over Cardiff City in a thrilling 4-2 final-day victory.
However, Wilshere soon left Carrow Road in pursuit of the opportunity to establish himself as a senior head coach, which is now set to be provided at Luton in what represents a significant risk — though one with considerable potential upside — for all parties.
