  1. Manchester City are facing transition following confirmation that both captain Bernardo Silva and defensive icon John Stones will both leave the club this summer.
  2. Former City defender Colin Hendry has identified January signing Marc Guéhi as a significant candidate to take the armband.
  3. While Rodri is a natural choice, his recent injuries have opened the door for other leaders in the squad to step forward for the 2026/27 season and beyond.

Marc Guehi is among the possibilities to become the next Manchester City captain, in the eyes of one former Sky Blue defender.

As the final weeks of the 2025/26 campaign unfold, the conversation at the Etihad Stadium is rapidly shifting from the hunt for a historic second domestic treble to the leadership debate that will be held this summer.

With Manchester City currently neck-and-neck with Arsenal in the Premier League and preparing for an FA Cup final against Chelsea on May 16, the club has already confirmed that another post-legend era is officially beginning.

Outgoing club captain Bernardo Silva has confirmed he will depart as a free agent in June, while long-serving defender John Stones announced this week that he too will end his trophy-laden 10-year stay this summer.

These exits, combined with Rodri’s recent injury struggles, have forced fans and former players alike to look toward newer faces in the dressing room – specifically January arrival Marc Guéhi – as potential candidates to inherit the armband for the 2026/27 season.

Who could be the next Man City captain?

Speaking exclusively to City Xtra on behalf of 10bet, former Manchester City and Scotland centre-back Colin Hendry was quizzed on the debate around who should succeed Bernardo Silva as the club’s captain from the 2026/27 season onwards.

“Initially, I’d say Rodri would be the one for me. He’s been a little injury-ravaged recently, so it depends on consistency,” Hendry pointed out. He continued, “Marc Guéhi at the back, possibly, but there are two or three candidates.

“I’m happy if it’s a midfielder or a defender. I’m not so keen on goalkeepers being captains – that’s just my personal preference – I prefer an outfield player.

“Bernardo has been a great servant to Manchester City, but there are several candidates more than sufficient to take on the role.”

Why Guehi and Rodri should be considered for Man City’s captaincy

Since his £20 million move from Crystal Palace in January 2026, Marc Guéhi has quickly established himself as a pillar of Pep Guardiola’s defence, with senior figures like Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol sidelined through injury.

Guéhi’s rapid integration into the Manchester City style of play has surpassed expectations of many supporters, making Colin Hendry’s recent suggestion of a captaincy bid far from speculative.

While Rodri remains the natural heir to many, his fitness issues and some doubts over his long-term future amid interest from Real Madrid have cast doubt over his abilities to steer the club forward from a captaincy role.

If Pep Guardiola follows his tradition of allowing the squad to vote on their leadership group, Marc Guéhi’s composure and vocal presence at the back could see him follow in the footsteps of previous iconic defensive captains.
