The saga around Cole Palmer’s groin injury is getting uglier and uglier.
Most sources are claiming that the attacking midfielder has had a consistent issue since last season, which has clearly not been made better by a busy summer where he featured a lot at the Club World Cup, had just a couple of weeks off then was thrown back into action in the new season.
Cole Palmer holds his groin against Bayern Munich.
When he pulled out of the warm up against West Ham last month alarm bells were ringing, but there were hopes that a fortnight off while the international break was on would help out. He then came off the bench against Brentford and then played all 97 minutes against Bayern Munich.
It was very clear at the end of that game that he had made his issue worse, and the proof came on Saturday night against Manchester United where he lasted just 20 minutes before limping off.
Now we’ve got an even more scary report from Simon Phillips, who says that the attacking midfielder has made things significantly worse.
“SPTC Sources heard late last night that Cole Palmer has picked up a further injury to the same groin that he has been struggling with since way before the Club World Cup,” he wrote on his Substack.
Palmer has been suffering “pain and discomfort” and has had painkilling injections before each game.
“Palmer should not have played against Manchester United at the weekend as a result of this further pain, sources have made that clear,” Phillips adds.
“Sources have heard that Palmer has a new tear in the same groin and we are looking at around 3-6 weeks out. This is as a result of further aggravation to the groin in the Bayern game.”
Surgery “is an option” but is not guaranteed for him yet. Chelsea are in big trouble, even in the best case scenario of Palmer missing a few weeks.
