Rotherham United have put in a loan offer to League One rivals Luton Town for out of favour defender Tom Holmes, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

The Millers have undergone somewhat of a struggle of a start to the 2025-26 season, winning just one of their first five third tier matches - that came on the opening day of the season against Port Vale.

Matt Hamshaw's side have not won therefore in their previous four games, and he is looking for fresh reinforcements before Monday's 7pm transfer deadline - having already added 12 new bodies to his squad over the course of the summer.

FLW has been told a bid has gone in at the Rotherham end for Luton Town centre-back Tom Holmes, who is seemingly out of favour under Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield.

A loan offer has been submitted by the South Yorkshire outfit, and it remains to be seen if they will be successful of their pursuit of another central defender, having already landed Lenny Agbaire from Celtic on a permanent basis, as well as Jamal Baptiste on loan from Sheffield United earlier in the week.

Holmes came through the academy system of Reading FC, debuting professionally for the Royals in March 2018 at the age of 17 - six days before his 18th birthday.

The right-sided defender went on to make 133 appearances for the Berkshire outfit in all competitions, including over 100 matches at Championship level, before departing for Luton in January 2024 when they were a Premier League club, although he was loaned back to the SCL Stadium for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign.

The 25-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Kenilworth Road though, appearing just 22 times since being introduced into the squad last summer, and after a run of starts under both Rob Edwards and Matt Bloomfield, he was loaned out late on in the January transfer window to Belgian outfit Dender.

Appearing just twice for the Jupiler Pro League side over the course of three months, Holmes returned to Luton over the summer, but appears no closer to being considered by Bloomfield, having appeared once in the EFL Cup as a starter and coming on in League One action in the final minutes of August 19's 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

Having leaked eight goals in five matches so far this season though, Rotherham look to need more at the back, and Hamshaw believes Holmes is the missing piece of the Millers jigsaw.
