Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has issued a stern warning to Arsenal over getting comfortable in the Premier League title race, drawing on his iconic 2012 experience to remind the Gunners a nine-point lead in March is far from a guarantee.
Following City’s recent 1-1 draw at the London Stadium against West Ham and Arsenal’s victory over Everton, the gap at the summit has widened to nine points, leading many pundits to suggest the trophy is headed to North London for the first time in over two decades.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side has historically thrived in so-called clutch moments in the spring, and only recently won four of their five league fixtures across the month of February, creating an internal belief at the Etihad Stadium over the race being far from over.
Now, speaking exclusively to City Xtra on behalf of Stake, club legend Sergio Aguero spoke on numerous subjects surrounding the ongoing season, starting with the transition to more set-piece goals in the campaign.
“They’re resources that have been used in different periods of football,” the former Argentina international pointed out. “If a team manages to score many goals from throw-ins or corners, it’s logical that they keep using that system.”
Aguero continued, “And it works until the opponent figures it out and finds a way to stop it. Then it ends. You’d have to ask the fans if they like it or not. But I’m sure the supporters of the team scoring those goals are very happy with it.”
One man who has lifted the mood around Manchester City and arguably improved their chances of silverware this season is Antoine Semenyo, joining from Bournemouth during the January transfer window.
“He’s done very well,” Aguero said of the Ghanaian forward. “His start impressed me because he arrived in an already well-built team and adapted perfectly, scoring many goals and important ones too.”
Antoine Semenyo: Manchester City’s double-edged sword forcing tactical rethink
But can Manchester City really still win the Premier League title this season, even with Semenyo’s quality in attack given their nine-point gap to Arsenal at the top of the division heading into the March international break.
“Why not? It’s difficult, of course. But it was also difficult in 2012 and we all know how that ended,” Aguero stressed. “These are different moments, but what I mean is that in the Premier League nothing is decided until the very end.”
Aguero’s reference to ‘93:20‘ serves as a timely psychological boost for a Manchester City squad that has looked fatigued, particularly throughout phases of their damning Champions League exit to Real Madrid.
By highlighting the unpredictability of the English top-flight, the club’s all-time leading goalscorer is attempting to shift the pressure onto Mikel Arteta’s squad, who must now navigate their final seven games of the season with the weight of expectation.
As the players disperse for international duty following the weekend’s Carabao Cup Final between Arsenal and Manchester City, the narrative will undoubtedly focus on whether the latter can replicate their legendary 2012 comeback or other similar overturns in their best league campaigns.
With Antoine Semenyo already tallying seven goals since his winter move and Erling Haaland hungry to end a rare lean spell in the league, the post-break fixture list will determine if Aguero’s ‘warning’ becomes a reality.
