Lee Hendrie has told FLW how important the rest of the summer window could be for Sheffield Wednesday
Lee Hendrie believes Sheffield Wednesday must get some fresh faces into the squad this summer to replace the players that have left.
The Owls have been linked with Manchester United duo Toby Collyer and Harry Amass as potential options to arrive on loan.
Henrik Pedersen’s side have seen the likes of Josh Windass, Michael Smith and Djedi Gassama all depart earlier in the transfer window.
The Yorkshire outfit have until 1 September to complete any business, but financial issues mean loans and free agents are likely to be their only avenue to bringing players to the club.
Sheffield Wednesday made a losing start to the new Championship campaign, falling to a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
Hendrie has claimed that Sheffield Wednesday have to get fresh faces into the team before the market shuts in September.
While he expected worse from their clash with Leicester, he still predicts that the club will be fighting relegation this season, so young blood coming in to help that fight will be necessary.
“I think they need to bring fresh young blood in just to give them some sort of hope of staying in the Championship this season and try and push that team forward,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“I actually thought Leicester would walk all over them.
“I know the result obviously wasn’t how they [wanted] the weekend [to go], Barry Bannan getting a red card.
“Bringing new faces in is a must for them because they’ve lost a hell of a lot of players, good players.
“It’s hard to replace, particularly when you’re fighting to stay in the league, so fresh young talent, hopefully that’s the way forward for Sheffield Wednesday.”
Sheffield Wednesday conceded two second-half goals to lose their 1-0 lead to Leicester on Sunday, with Bannan receiving a red card in the 76th minute with the score still 1-1.
Collyer and Amass have been taking part in pre-season at Man United under Ruben Amorim after breaking into the first-team squad last season.
The midfielder featured six times in the Premier League, with injuries preventing him from taking on a more important role in the squad, while Amass played in five league fixtures.
The duo were also part of Amorim's squad as they reached the Europa League final, with Collyer earning six appearances in the European competition and the full-back playing twice.
Ultimately, though, time out on loan will be more beneficial to their development.
Sheffield Wednesday do face competition for Collyer from rivals Hull City, with the Tigers reportedly confident of sealing a deal for the midfielder.
Losing out on the 21-year-old would be frustrating, as he would offer some defensive solidity to the side, which could prove very important.
Amass would be a solid signing, however, and it would be a great opportunity for the teenager to prove himself at senior level on a more consistent basis.
While Man United have obviously struggled in the Premier League, both youngsters have both earned minutes under Ruben Amorim, which shows that there is potential there for both of them to prove very capable Championship players.
