Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on Akin Famewo's departure from Sheffield Wednesday
Lee Hendrie has urged Sheffield Wednesday to resolve their issues behind the scenes quickly amid Akin Famewo’s impending move to Hull City.
It has been reported by Hull Live that the Tigers are closing in on the 26-year-old as a free agent after he departed Hillsborough.
The defender had his contract terminated, joining the likes of Josh Windass and Michael Smith in jumping ship from the Owls amid unpaid wages in three of the last four months.
Famewo featured 13 times in the Championship last season for Sheffield Wednesday as Danny Rohl’s side finished 12th in the table.
Hendrie has claimed that losing Famewo is another blow for Sheffield Wednesday going into the new Championship season.
He believes the issues at the top of the club are now filtering down to the very bottom, and that the players need light at the end of the tunnel in order to buy into the future direction of the team.
“Losing Akin Famewo to Hull would be a massive blow, there’s no doubt,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“I think you weigh up this situation at Wednesday at the moment and the likes of Windass, Famewo, the list goes on of where they’re at and what they’re not doing.
“It just spells out massive danger, it really does.
“It’s now filtering through to the squad of players that are saying they didn’t want Danny Rohl there, didn’t want him back.
“I think all these problems are starting to come from the top down to the bottom now, and this is a problem, it really is.
“When you’re losing players, key players, and they’re getting linked away, there’s no doubt that they’re going to be thinking better things, particularly when the club is in such a shamble state at the moment, it needs to be resolved.
“It needs to be resolved quickly, so the players can buy into what they’re going to do, and what they’re going to be at.
“And this is why players are turning their head, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this happens, but it’d be a massive blow again for Sheffield Wednesday, which we keep talking about.”
Sheffield Wednesday will get their new season underway on 10 August with a trip to face Leicester City.
Losing Famewo on the face of it isn’t a major issue given he wasn’t that high up the pecking order to begin with.
But the confluence of all these different factors behind the scenes means that his exit is another big blow to the team.
Given their financial problems, they cannot afford for these players to leave the club for nothing, as it leaves the squad very thin going into the new campaign.
Sheffield Wednesday need a resolution to Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership quickly, otherwise it could be a very long season for the Owls.
