Lee Hendrie is unsurprised by the dearth of transfer activity at Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day.

The Owls were able to secure a loan deal with Manchester United for Harry Amass prior to the market closing.

However, it was reported that a proposed move for Manchester City youngster Jaden Heskey was blocked by the EFL, who are monitoring the club’s spending due to financial issues.

Amass was only the second arrival at Hillsborough through the transfer window, with Ethan Horvath also joining on loan from Cardiff City.

Hendrie believes that the deal for Amass could work out quite well for the youngster given how few players there are in the overall Sheffield Wednesday squad.

However, he is unsurprised by their general lack of business this summer, suggesting that the left-back coming in at all should be considered a bonus when there’s so much uncertainty behind the scenes at the club.

“It’s been a tough ask for Sheffield Wednesday, and I know that they’ve signed Harry Amass from Man United,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.

“But no more signings, which I think this will be good for him to get in the mix.

“On a personal note, I think Sheffield Wednesday were always going to struggle to bring players in, particularly not knowing what’s going on at the football club.

“So, yes, I think this is one that’s just an added bonus for that Sheffield Wednesday squad, as they’re very light.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s difficult start to the season

Sheffield Wednesday are struggling for form on the pitch under Henrik Pedersen, who was promoted to head coach over the summer after Danny Rohl’s exit.

The Owls have earned just one point from their opening four fixtures, leaving them 23rd in the Championship table, only above bitter rivals Sheffield United.

Amass will be aiming to make his first appearance for his new club after the September international break.

Next up for Sheffield Wednesday is a home clash against Bristol City on 13 September in a 3pm kick-off.

Harry Amass deal is better than nothing for Sheffield Wednesday

Amass earned five Premier League appearances for Man United last season, so clearly has a lot of promise.

His arrival is better than the alternative for Sheffield Wednesday, which was nobody joining the club instead.

While it’s hard to imagine any one player making a big impact on this side given all the issues behind the scenes, that may change if a takeover can be completed soon and some free agents could be brought in.

The failure to bring in Heskey as well is disappointing for supporters, but the reality of the situation is that the Owls’ finances are extremely bad under Dejphon Chansiri and any signing at all coming in is a positive.
