Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on QPR winning the race to the signature of Kwame Poku
Lee Hendrie has claimed that Birmingham City and Rangers could regret missing out on the signing of Kwame Poku amid his impending move to QPR.
It was reported by Sky Sports (09.19) that the Hoops are closing in on a £900,000 deal to sign the player following his Peterborough United exit.
The winger is closing in on a move to the Championship, after standing out as a top talent in League One in the last couple of seasons.
He has turned down interest from both Birmingham and Rangers, with a switch to Loftus Road now nearing completion.
Hendrie believes that it is an exciting time for QPR as they look to finalise this deal to bring Poku to the club.
When asked whether Birmingham and Rangers could regret failing to secure a deal for the winger, Hendrie exclusively told Football League World: “Yes, I do.
“I do think that the way QPR are going with young players that they’ve used last season, I think it’s quite exciting for QPR that they’ve ended up landing him.
“I do think that for Birmingham and Rangers, he’s the type of player you think can change games, can affect games and maybe they will regret not signing him.
“Because he has bags of potential, but it looks like he’s made up his mind and he’s ever-closer to signing for QPR.
“So, it will be one that will certainly be kept tabs on.”
Poku has spent the last four seasons as a key part of the Peterborough squad, making 121 league appearances in that time.
He contributed 12 goals and eight assists last season, with the team struggling to an 18th place finish despite his standout displays.
Poku’s contract has expired, but the Posh have still earned a six-figure fee due to his age.
The 23-year-old will make the step up to the Championship once his move to QPR is complete, joining Julien Stéphan’s side.
Poku has the ability to play in the Championship, as shown by his impressive performances in League One in the last two years.
Given the cost of £900,000, this could prove a brilliant signing for the London outfit, and winning the race to his signature is a real coup.
Birmingham and Rangers are both attractive options, but the Hoops were able to convince him to move to them instead, which is a promising sign.
The arrival of Stéphan as manager brings some uncertainty going into the new season for QPR, but the arrival of Poku will be a positive start to his reign as manager.
