An exciting winger confirmed he's ready to join Liverpool.
Arne Slot's current attacking setup has created an unusual imbalance. Despite being one of the most dangerous forward lines in Europe last season, they arguably lack a true, touchline-hugging winger.
Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, while often deployed in wide positions on paper, are not traditional wingers in the classic sense. Both prefer to drift infield, operating as inside forwards who attack central spaces, combine in tight areas, and look to finish moves rather than stretch the pitch horizontally.
This tendency naturally narrows Liverpool’s attacking shape. Without players consistently holding width, opposition defenses can stay compact and limit the space available for Liverpool’s creators.
At present, Rio Ngumoha stands out as the only player in the squad who profiles as a more traditional winger. He is comfortable staying wide, taking on defenders on the outside, and delivering from the byline. However, Liverpool should not have to rely on a 17-year-old.
This is why reinforcing the winger position will be a priority in the summer transfer window.
Adding at least one, if not two, natural wide players would give Liverpool greater tactical flexibility. A proper winger can stretch defences, create isolation situations, and open up space for inside forwards like Salah and Gakpo to thrive in the areas they prefer.
There have been a myriad of names mentioned over the last few months.
But in all fairness probably none of them fit the ideal profile as well as the winger Liverpool encountered at the weekend.
Yankuba Minteh has been linked with a move to Anfield and he confirmed on Sunday afternoon that he is ready for that step and ready for a reunion with his former boss at Feyenoord.
The Gambian was matched up against Liverpool's fastest player in Jeremie Frimpon. Yet even the Dutchman could not stop Minteh.
He caused Liverpool so much problems. Whether it's running in behind, or taking Frimpong on in one vs one situations. There seemed to be no way of handling the tricky winger.
Minteh's extraordinary strength comes from his extreme speed. He was so fast throughout the game and not just when running forward. He was constantly sprinting back to help his teammates out and limit Frimpong's impact going forward.
The way he brought intensity into the game is exactly what Liverpool need right now. There is none of that in Slot's team.
Minteh is one of the players who averages the most sprints per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He's an incredibly hard-working player and on top of that he showed his offensive threat as well.
His beautiful cross to Jack Hinshelwood created Brighton's winner.
Liverpool need players like him. Slot has been speaking about not having a 'Jacob Murphy profile' to facilitate chances for the likes of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.
Minteh showed he can be that profile Liverpool lack. He confirmed with his extraordinary performance and speed that he is ready to join Liverpool, and that he is exactly what the Reds need.
