Is FC Bayern facing another setback at the end of the year? Michael Olise had to undergo eye surgery after the Mainz game, but he is unlikely to play in Heidenheim – Kompany does not want to take any risks
FC Bayern are keeping a watchful eye on Michael Olise ahead of the last competitive match of the year. The French attacking player had to undergo a minor medical procedure on his eye after the 2-2 draw against 1. FSV Mainz 05, as reported by BILD. As a result, the 24-year-old was absent from team training on Tuesday and Wednesday, which immediately caused increased attention at Säbener Straße
On Thursday, there was at least an initial positive signal: Olise completed some light running training, which suggests that the procedure went well. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to play against 1. FC Heidenheim on Sunday. One thing is clear at FC Bayern: no unnecessary risks will be taken in the last game of the calendar year – especially not with a player who has been one of the absolute top performers this season
Olise has quickly developed into an indispensable factor in Munich’s attacking play. With nine goals and 14 assists, the Frenchman is currently the team’s second-highest scorer and is particularly influential on the right flank with his pace, creativity and penetration. He has featured in almost every game and has often been the focal point of Vincent Kompany’s attacking play
A potential loss would undoubtedly be painful in sporting terms, but Kompany also has alternatives at his disposal. Luis Díaz returns to the squad after serving his yellow card suspension and brings additional quality to the wing positions
Shooting star Lennart Karl is also pushing himself further forward. The 17-year-old has made a lasting impression recently with strong performances and six goals for the season and has earned himself a permanent place in the rotation
One thing is clear: Olise wants to play. The running training he has completed shows that he is doing everything he can to get back on the pitch before the winter break. But it is also clear that Bayern are thinking long-term. If there are any doubts about his full fitness, Munich will not take any risks – not least because their attack is broad enough to compensate for a short-term absence
Whether Olise plays in Heidenheim or not is likely to be decided in the short term. For Vincent Kompany, it is a trade-off between sporting ambition and medical reason. And it is precisely this balance that has made FC Bayern so stable so far this season.
