Fabrizio Romano confirms Barcelona target will leave Premier League club this summer

In the event that Ferran Torres leaves this summer, it would open up the possibility of Barcelona signing a new defender. As things stand, the funds would not be available for someone else to come in alongside Julian Alvarez (should a deal finally be struck with Atletico Madrid), but that would change in the event of a big-money sale.

Going into the summer, it had been expected that Barcelona would seek a new centre-back, given their defensive woes in last season’s Champions League. It’s not been a priority in recent weeks, but that would surely change if they have money to spend, which would be the case if Torres joins Paris Saint-Germain or another club.

In terms of targets, Barcelona have been linked with Cristian Romero in recent weeks. The defender, who’s currently with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, would welcome a move to the Spotify Camp Nou, and the chances of that happening this summer have not taken a step closer.

According to Fabrizio Romano (via CaughtOffside), Romero has decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, and the Premier League club are prepared to sanction an exit. The transfer expert also confirmed that Barcelona like the veteran defender, although they currently trail Inter Milan in the race for his signature.

Romero deal makes a lot of sense for Barcelona

It’s well-documented that Romero has an aggressive streak that has cost him at times in England, but this also means that his game is more suited to La Liga. Thus, a move to Barcelona would make a lot of sense for him, but it would also be very beneficial for the Catalans, who are in desperate need of experience and leadership in their back-line.

This lack thereof last season ultimately led to them not keeping a single clean sheet in last season’s Champions League, but Romero could be the man to fix their problems going forward.
