Arsenal’s rise to the summit of English football has brought many rewards. It has also brought renewed attention from Europe’s elite clubs.
According to reporting from Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have made contact with people close to Riccardo Calafiori as they assess potential defensive additions this summer. While no formal approach to Arsenal has been reported, the interest highlights the growing reputation of a player who has become an important figure under Mikel Arteta.

Real Madrid continue to evaluate solutions across their back line, particularly with concerns around depth and fitness in both central defence and left-back positions.
Romano explained the situation in detail.
“Real Madrid are not done for defenders because the situation is linked to the centre-back and left-back position,” he said.
“Basically, Real Madrid at left-back have Alvaro Carreras and then Ferland Mendy, who is injured now and had many injuries over the recent years.
“The idea of Real Madrid is if there is an opportunity of a player who can help as a centre-back and as a left-back, and Riccardo Calafiori, for example, is that kind of profile, for Real Madrid could be an interesting option to follow on the market.

“For Calafiori, what I can reveal to you is that there’s been contact with those close to Calafiori a few weeks ago, with Real Madrid asking about information on the Italian defender.
“He’s still a very important player for Arsenal. So, he’s not an easy one at all. And for Arsenal, Calafiori is really an important part of the project. So, let’s see what’s happening there. But Real Madrid are looking for that kind of player.”
Calafiori’s appeal is obvious. The Italian international can operate comfortably at left-back, centre-back and even step into midfield areas during possession phases.
Arteta has previously described him as “unpredictable”, a quality that has become increasingly valuable in modern football. During a season in which Arsenal secured the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final, Calafiori made 36 appearances, contributing one goal and three assists.

His technical quality, tactical flexibility and composure on the ball make him a profile that many top clubs covet.
Any potential deal would be complicated. Arsenal are not under pressure to sell and view Calafiori as an integral part of their long-term plans.
However, squad planning always requires difficult decisions. The presence of Piero Hincapie and the continued development of Myles Lewis-Skelly provide Arsenal with options across the left side of defence.

There is also the question of value. Should Real Madrid decide to test Arsenal’s resolve with a substantial offer, the club’s hierarchy would need to weigh the player’s importance against the opportunity to reinvest elsewhere in the squad.
For now, Arsenal remain firmly in control of the situation. Real Madrid’s admiration is clear, but admiration and acquisition are often very different things in the transfer market.
When Real Madrid begin tracking your players, it usually means those players are performing at an elite level. Calafiori has done exactly that since arriving at the Emirates. His adaptability has given Arteta valuable tactical flexibility and his aggressive style suits the manager’s approach perfectly.
Supporters will understandably be reluctant to see him leave. Arsenal have spent years building a title winning squad and breaking up key partnerships is rarely desirable. Calafiori still looks capable of improving further and his best years remain ahead of him.
That said, Arsenal’s position is stronger than in previous eras. The squad has genuine depth and competition. Lewis-Skelly’s emergence has been one of the success stories of the season, while Hincapie offers another high quality option.
Most supporters would still want Arsenal to reject any approach. Keeping elite players is part of sustaining success. Yet if Real Madrid eventually placed an extraordinary offer on the table, fans would trust the recruitment team to make a decision that benefits the club’s long-term future.
For now, Arsenal supporters can take confidence from one simple fact. Real Madrid are looking because Arsenal possess one of Europe’s most valuable defensive talents.
