Just a year after the excitement of lifting the Premier League trophy, Arne Slot finds himself navigating an increasingly turbulent storm at Anfield. The Reds have struggled a lot this season and they are set to end the season without silverware, a huge surprise from how they performed last year and the kind of business they did in the summer transfer window last year.
With frustrated supporters openly clamouring for a managerial change, reports inevitably linked the Merseyside club with former fan-favourite Xabi Alonso.
However, highly respected transfer authority Fabrizio Romano has definitively quashed the speculation, confirming that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) remain entirely committed to Slot and have absolutely no intention of making a change in the dugout.
Last season, Slot successfully capitalised on the world-class foundations left behind by Jürgen Klopp, steering the Reds to an incredible Premier League title in his debut campaign.
Fast forward to May 2026, and the contrast is stark. They are currently 20 points behind league leaders Arsenal.
While speaking on his Youtube channel, Romano provided the latest update. He said:
“At the moment, the feeling at Liverpool, I can confirm that it is absolutely in the direction that they want to continue with Slot. Why? Because so far, and it’s May now, it’s no longer February, March, or April. In May, Liverpool have not made contact with any other manager. There were many rumours on Liverpool making contact with Alonso coming from Germany, but I can guarantee that Liverpool this year never made any direct approach with Alonso or with his agents.”
Ultimately, Liverpool’s unwavering public backing provides Slot with crucial breathing room to navigate the remainder of the season, but it also places immense importance on the upcoming summer transfer window.
Slot has been granted the opportunity to fix the ongoing structural issues, but if Liverpool do not hit the ground running with an energised, cohesive identity next season, the calls for his departure will become impossible to ignore.
It is going to be a crucial summer for Liverpool and they have some big decisions to make. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are leaving the club while Alisson Becker could be heading out as well.
