Barcelona are aiming to sign a new number nine this summer, as they seek to replace the already-departed Robert Lewandowski. For several months, their leading target has been Julian Alvarez, and while the player himself publicly expressed his desire to leave Atletico Madrid during the 2026 World Cup, there is no guarantee that he nor the Catalans get their wish.
The Alvarez saga has been very public over the last few weeks, especially since Alvarez’s comments. Atleti have come out and made it very clear that they will not sell to Barcelona, and on the back of this, moves are being made within the offices of the Spotify Camp Nou.
According to Fabrizio Romano (via CaughtOffside), Barcelona have started putting serious effort into identifying alternative targets to Alvarez, with it becoming increasingly clear that a deal may not be able to be done with Atleti this summer.
“Barcelona have started internally at the moment, so president, director, coach, people at the club, started discussing alternative options if they can’t sign Julian Alvarez. So, Barcelona have started considering alternatives.”
It is imperative that Barcelona sign a new striker this summer, especially as there is uncertainty over the future of Ferran Torres. While it would be the club’s dream to sign Alvarez, there is a very real chance that Atleti simply refuse to sell at any price, and if there was no alternatives lined up, the Catalans would be left with nothing.
It’s smart that different options are being looked at now, although it will be very interesting to see who they are. Harry Kane and Eli Junior Kroupi have already been taken off the table, so there is unlikely to be too many options that Barcelona can turn to in the event that Alvarez is unobtainable.
