The scenario: The second-placed team are up against the side in second-to-last place. Borussia have lost just one of their last 25 Bundesliga matches across this season and last, while St. Pauli have won only one of their last 14 matches in the top flight. But only two of their ten defeats have ended by a margin of two or more goals.
Home & away: Dortmund are third in the home table, St. Pauli are 15th in the away table and have picked up five points on the road so far (win at HSV, draws in Cologne and Mainz). Only HSV have scored fewer than six away goals. Borussia have won ten of their last 12 home games across two seasons, drawn twice and are the only team apart from Bayern Munich not to have lost at home this season. They have conceded only four goals in their eight home games this season, keeping six clean sheets.
Head-to-head record: Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in 13 league games against this opponent, celebrating 11 wins in the process. The Hamburg-based club's last Bundesliga victory against BVB was over 36 years ago: in November 1989, St. Pauli fought back from 1-0 down after Andreas Möller's opener to win 2-1 at home thanks to goals from Andre Golke and Dirk Zander. St. Pauli have lost more often to BVB than to any other club in the Bundesliga (13 defeats in 19 encounters) and have conceded more goals (40). FC St. Pauli have not won any of their nine away games at the Strobelallee (three draws, six defeats) and have only played more frequently without ever winning in Bremen (ten times).
Statistics: With 36 points, BVB have had their best first half of the season in seven years (they only had 25 points at the same point a year ago) and can rely on a strong defence. They have had nine games so far without conceding a goal, the most in the league, and only Bayern Munich have conceded fewer goals than Borussia Dortmund (15), who have only conceded four goals from set pieces so far. Leipzig are the only team to defend set pieces more successfully. After three consecutive unbeaten games, FC St. Pauli suffered an unfortunate 2-1 defeat in Wolfsburg at the start of the year. This leaves the Hamburg club on 12 points, the lowest of any team (but they still have a game in hand). Only seven clubs have conceded fewer than 28 goals. Only Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund (172 each) have allowed fewer shots than the team from Millerntor (185). Like BVB, St. Pauli have only conceded four goals from set pieces.
Reverse fixture: In front of 29,546 spectators in a sold-out stadium at Millerntor, BVB only found their rhythm after 20 minutes at the start of the 2025/26 season and took a deserved lead ten minutes before half-time through a goal from Serhou Guirassy. Four minutes later, the goalscorer missed the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot. St. Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj also saved Julian Brandt's hard, well-placed shot two minutes after the restart. After Andreas Hountondji's 1-1 equaliser in the 50th minute, the Black & Yellows were under pressure. A goal from Waldemar Anton (67') and a superb strike by Brandt gave BVB a 3-1 lead. But the game took another turn: Filippo Mane was sent off, a penalty was awarded and Danel Sinani scored to make it 3-2 in the 86th minute, followed three minutes later by Eric Smith's equaliser to make it 3-3.
Lucas Barrios trifft am 19. Februar 2011 zum 1:0 ins Tor des FC St. Pauli (Endstand 2:0).
Biggest home win: On Matchday 34 of the 1990/91 season, the Black & Yellows celebrated a 5-2 victory over the Kiezkickers. Gerhard Poschner and Michael Rummenigge scored in the first half, then Flemming Povlsen bagged a brace and Jürgen Wegmann added another in the second half for BVB in front of just 30,624 spectators at the Westfalenstadion.Compiled by Boris Rupert
