Falkirk Football Club have announced that they will have an official women’s team from the 2026/27 season.

The club will absorb the first team of the existing Falkirk Football Community Foundation, currently known as Falkirk Ladies Football Club. They will now compete under the name Falkirk FC Women.

The team currently plays in the Barclays Scottish Women’s Championship, the third tier of Scottish women’s football.

Ambitious Bairns weigh up promotion possibilities

Falkirk’s focus over the past two seasons has been consecutive men’s team promotions and securing top-six football in the top flight. Now, the club feels the ‘time is right’ to take over the women’s team too.

The move follows other Premiership sides in integrating an ambitious women’s team under the club name. The top five teams in Scottish men’s football — Hearts, Rangers, Celtic, Motherwell and Hibernian — each have corresponding women’s teams playing in the SWPL.

Falkirk Ladies currently sit second in the Championship, five points behind league leaders Renfrew, with four games remaining.

Falkirk Academy continue work with youth pathways

Previously, Falkirk Ladies have played under the Falkirk Football Community Foundation. This academy structure boasts one of the largest pathways for women and girls in Scotland. The local area has produced numerous Scotland stars, including Rangers skipper Nicola Docherty, Liverpool midfielder Sam Kerr, and Glasgow City manager Leanne Ross.

Moving forward, Falkirk’s academy structure will continue to underpin the senior team. Falkirk Foundation CEO Derek Allison reflected that the move offers young female players a ‘clear route into the senior game’.

Falkirk CEO Jamie Swinney hailed the move as a ‘key milestone for the football club’. He added that it expressed their ‘desire to not only continue to grow the club but to contribute to the growth of girls and women’s football in our town and community’.
