Santos’ Deliberative Council has rejected a plan to require previous council terms for anyone seeking the club presidency, following supporter pressure at a meeting on Thursday night at Vila Belmiro.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the Statute Committee initially proposed three council terms as a prerequisite, then scaled it back to two after a backlash.
During Thursday’s session, the committee accepted an amendment setting the bar at one term, but councillors voted it down by 65 to 50.
Council president Fernando Akaoui then put to a vote amendments to remove the clause entirely, and the change passed by 65 to 41.
It was another setback for the Statute Committee, which had already lost the push to extend the membership period for voting rights from three to five years.
Organised supporters again staged protests outside Vila Belmiro, and the meeting was expected to run until late on Thursday.
