FC Bayern are away to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday (live text and free Web Radio commentary from 21:00 CET on fcbayern.com and in the FC Bayern app) to wrap up the league phase in the Champions League. Head coach Vincent Kompany's side will be looking to get back to winning ways after last weekend's 2-1 defeat in the Bundesliga against FC Augsburg and secure one of the top two places in Europe's premier club competition. Find out what that would mean and get all the key information on the match in Eindhoven in our preview.
Final training, press conference & more - all the updates from Bayern's day before the match against PSV Eindhoven:
FC Bayern suffered their first defeat of the season in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Despite taking a 1-0 lead, the Munich side lost 2-1 to FC Augsburg on their home turf at the Allianz Arena, but just four days later Bayern have the opportunity to show a reaction. "We have to look ahead and react as we have done in the past," said board member for sport Max Eberl straight after the Augsburg game. "Losing is never fun. We're disappointed, but the most important thing is how we respond to it, how quickly we put it out of our minds, focus on the next game and respond on the pitch. We want to take the anger we feel now and bring it onto the pitch in the next game and show our quality and energy," said defender Jonathan Tah, setting out FCB's clear objective in Eindhoven.
Glenn van den Brink of the FC Bayern Holland fan club reveals what Bayern fans can expect in Eindhoven:
Bayern have already qualified for the round of 16 and are enjoying an outstanding league phase with six wins from seven games. Moreover, the record champions are already guaranteed a place in the top four and thus the right to play at home in the second leg of the round of 16 and a possible quarter-final. With a point or a win, the Munich men would definitely finish the league phase in one of the top two places. FCB would then also have the right to play a possible semi-final second leg at home. "I never talk about losing when we still have a game to play. That's not my mentality. It's all about winning," said head coach Vincent Kompany at the press conference on Tuesday.
The facts on the game against Eindhoven:
PSV, whose squad includes two former FCB players in Paul Wanner and Ivan Perišić, are still battling to progress in Europe's premier club competition. A 3-1 defeat against Union Saint-Gilloise in the opening game was followed by a run of four unbeaten games in a row, in which coach Peter Bosz's side beat Napoli 6-2 and Liverpool 4-1. However, their most recent defeats came against Atlético Madrid (3-2) and Newcastle United (3-0). With eight points, PSV are in 22nd place ahead of the final matchday, which would mean the play-offs. "If we win, we're through, so we'll play to win. If that doesn't work out, we'll try to get a draw. And if that doesn't work either, we'll have to wait and see what happens in the other games," said Bosz, summarising the situation. Despite only securing a 2-2 draw against relegation candidates NAC Breda in Saturday's dress rehearsal for the game against FCB, Eindhoven are absolutely dominating the domestic Eredivisie and have a 14-point lead over second-placed Feyenoord. "We're well prepared and know it's an important game. We know they're one of the best teams. But I know our strengths, so I'm optimistic," said former FCB player Paul Wanner. "I had a terrific time at Bayern. I'm incredibly grateful to the club." Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany said with regard to the upcoming opponents: "I would compare PSV and Bayern, there are a lot of similarities: how we attack, the roles of the strikers, the number ten, the full-backs, the midfield, the build-up play. You can see that the team believes in itself. They’re strong up front and very quick to counter-attack and get in front of goal. They also have the players to score goals."
We spoke to Arjen Robben about the clash in Eindhoven:
Bayern will be without the suspended Minjae Kim, as well as the injured Raphaël Guerreiro (calf), Konrad Laimer (calf) and Josip Stanišić (right ankle) against PSV .
PSV will be without Myron Boadu, Alassane Pléa, Ruben van Bommel (all knee problems), Ricardo Pepi (broken forearm), Yarek Gasiorowski (suspended) and Nick Olij (groin).
