FC Bayern are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and will face Real Madrid, of all teams, in the quarter-finals. Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl has clear words on the starting position and at the same time makes a self-confident declaration of intent
After their confident progress into the last eight, the German record champions are already looking ahead to the next highlight. Real Madrid, one of the biggest names in European soccer, awaits – for Max Eberl, the clash is more than just a classic
„I think it’s a worthy quarter-final. We’re looking forward to it,“ said the Bayern sporting director after the 4:1 win against Bergamo. The anticipation is palpable, but at the same time those in charge in Munich are aware of the challenge that lies ahead
The Whites have been the epitome of success in the Champions League for years and Real regularly show their special class in knockout matches – a quality that Eberl also expressly emphasizes
Despite the great respect, Bayern are confidently looking ahead at Säbener Straße. Eberl emphasizes that Bayern have put themselves in a strong position this season: „I believe that we have really already put ourselves in a position in the Champions League this season where you can say that we are among the favourites.“
This assessment underlines FCB’s ambition to attack at the very top this season and, according to Eberl, their performances in the Bundesliga, cup and premier class give them every reason to do so
However, the 52-year-old also issued an urgent warning about their upcoming opponents, saying that Real Madrid are a club that are at their best when it matters: „They know that when it matters, they are usually there.“
The current perception of the Spaniards is particularly remarkable for Eberl. After the somewhat surprising progress against Manchester City, he even sees Real in an unusual role: „Perhaps they are in an underdog role according to the motto: Nobody is expecting us – and that makes them just as dangerous.“

A look at the past shows just how big the task really is for Munich. FC Bayern have been without a win against Real Madrid since 2014 – seven defeats and two draws speak for themselves
For Eberl, however, this is an additional motivating factor: „Then it’s about time,“ he said with a grin. The sporting director made it clear that the team sees the negative series not as a burden, but as an opportunity
Bayern are aware of the difficulty of the task, but are approaching the clash with conviction. „We know what we’re up against. We know what a great task, what a difficult task,“ said Eberl
At the same time, there is a clear message in his statements: FC Bayern feel ready to rewrite their own history against Real Madrid.
