Fenerbahçe have decided not to activate the €22 million (£19 million) option to buy West Ham United’s Edson Álvarez after an injury-hit loan. Takvim reports that technical director Zeki Murat Göle has informed the player and his representatives of the decision.
Álvarez arrived in the summer of 2025 with high expectations, yet his Süper Lig campaign never settled. The Mexican international made only 12 appearances, missing much of the season with a hamstring problem followed by ankle surgery.
Tensions escalated last week when he was reportedly omitted from the matchday squad after a confrontation with supporters. The episode capped a turbulent stint in Istanbul.
He is due to return to West Ham, who sit 18th in the Premier League, one point from safety. If the Hammers go down, the Mexican captain could be playing in the Championship next season.
Talk of a move to Tigres has surfaced, but his immediate future hinges on West Ham’s survival fight. For Fenerbahçe, his exit forms part of a broader clear-out to free foreign player slots for summer signings.
