Sunderland have been linked with Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy, though whether he would entertain a January switch to Wearside remains uncertain.

According to Fichajes, Sunderland are weighing up a £9.5m bid for the 30-year-old, who has missed close to 40 matches over the past two seasons due to injury.

Madrid may be open to an approach that could free room for further defensive recruitment, but it is less clear that Mendy would leave the Champions League giants for the Stadium of Light.

"My dream as a child was to play for Real Madrid and I've ultimately managed to achieve that," he told Realmadrid TV's Campo de Estrellas last year. "It's a dream come true to play for the best team in the world."
