Fermin Lopez is poised to commit his long-term future to Barcelona by signing a new contract until 2031, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

This new deal effectively ends Chelsea’s lingering transfer interest in the mercurial central midfielder.

The 22-year-old has been one of the breakout performers of the season under manager Hansi Flick, bagging 10 goals and six assists despite missing matches due to groin injuries.

His current deal runs until 2029, but Barcelona have rewarded his rapid rise with improved terms and an even longer commitment.

Lopez’s impact has been felt on the biggest stages. He struck a memorable Champions League hat-trick against Olympiacos and has consistently delivered in EL Clasico fixtures.

He scored in Barcelona’s 2-1 La Liga defeat at Real Madrid and provided an assist in their Spanish Super Cup victory over their arch-rivals earlier this month.

Chelsea explored a move for the Spain international in August 2025, identifying him as a potential number ten.

However, that interest never advanced, with Barcelona reluctant to sell an academy graduate unless a substantial offer arrived. Six months on, the club’s stance is even stronger.

A product of La Masia after joining from Real Betis aged 12, Lopez spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Linares before breaking into the first team under Xavi Hernandez.

He scored 11 goals in 43 appearances in 2023/24, followed by eight goals and 10 assists in 46 outings last term, mostly from the bench.

Lopez has evolved into a key player under Flick. His vertical running, quick turns between the lines and relentless off-ball pressing add a direct edge to Barcelona’s possession game.

He has started 16 of the 25 matches he has featured in this season. Keeping him is a massive win for the Catalan side, especially following the departure of Dro Fernandez.
