Fernando Diniz makes his Corinthians bow at 21:00 on Thursday against Argentina’s Platense at Estadio Vicente López, opening Group E of the Copa Libertadores. The 52-year-old arrives looking to improve a mixed record in first games.
Meu Timao notes that since 2009 he has overseen 20 debuts, posting eight wins, seven draws and five defeats, a 51.7% return. His sides have scored 29 goals and conceded 23, averages of 1.45 for and 1.15 against.
The standout opener came with Brazil on 8 September 2023, a 5-1 win over Bolivia in Belém in 2026 World Cup qualifying. Neymar and Rodrygo both struck twice, Raphinha added the other.
At club level, Audax beat São Paulo 4-2 in 2017 in Barueri. His heaviest inaugural loss was in 2012, Atlético Sorocaba falling 4-2 to Palmeiras B in Paulista A2.
His most recent debut, with Vasco da Gama in May 2025, ended in a 1-0 defeat to Argentina’s Lanús in the Copa Sudamericana.
Diniz also inherits a team on a nine-match winless run. Corinthians have not won since 19 February, a 1-0 Brasileirão victory at Athletico-PR’s Arena da Baixada, followed by five draws and four losses.
