Gustavo Henrique drew glowing praise from Corinthians head coach Fernando Diniz after the 2-0 Copa Libertadores victory over Peñarol at Neo Química Arena on Thursday.

According to Meu Timao, Diniz highlighted the centre-back’s development under his guidance and said that with a little more time, had he arrived earlier, Gustavo Henrique might have had a chance to compete at the next World Cup. He stressed the defender’s importance to the team’s structure, citing his impact in defence and attack and his growing leadership.

Diniz also underlined the player’s natural authority and above-average game intelligence, adding that his character and professionalism benefit the club on and off the pitch.

The goal against Peñarol was Gustavo Henrique’s ninth for Corinthians, making the number 13 the club’s most prolific defender of the decade.

The result keeps Corinthians top of Group E with a perfect record, three wins from three and nine points. Platense sit second on six, while Peñarol and Santa Fe have one point each. Corinthians return to action on Sunday in the Brasileirão, away to Mirassol at Estádio José Maria de Campos Maia at 20:30, in the 14th round.
