Corinthians host Internacional on Thursday at 20:00 in the Copa do Brasil last-16 second leg, trailing 2-0 from Beira-Rio. For a quarter-final place, Fernando Diniz must engineer the first comeback of his managerial career in this competition.
According to Meu Timao, before this tie his sides had trailed after the first leg on four occasions in the Copa do Brasil and he has not overturned the deficit in any of them.
The first instance came with Votoraty in 2010, a 1-0 first-leg loss to Grêmio in the second round followed by a 3-0 defeat in the return.
In 2018 at Athletico Paranaense, after a 2-1 home defeat to Cruzeiro in the last 16, Diniz was dismissed before the second leg.
With São Paulo in 2020, a 1-0 semi-final first-leg loss to Grêmio in Porto Alegre was followed by a 0-0 home draw that confirmed elimination. Most recently, at Santos in 2021, he was again sacked before the return after a 1-0 quarter-final first-leg defeat to Athletico Paranaense at the Arena da Baixada.
To turn this tie around, he must also overcome the biggest first-leg deficit he has faced in the competition. Corinthians will have the Neo Química Arena as their main ally, with organised supporters mobilised for a coordinated display across the stands for the full 90 minutes.
To advance, Corinthians must beat Internacional by three or more goals. A two-goal win would take the tie to penalties, any other result sends Internacional through.
