Fernando Diniz takes charge of his first Corinthians derby against Palmeiras at Neo Química Arena on Sunday, aiming to end a three-year wait for a win over the rivals. Kick-off is at 18:30.

According to Meu Timao, this is his opening clássico at the helm, and Palmeiras boss Abel Ferreira will be absent through suspension.

Diniz first met Palmeiras in 2011 with Paulista de Jundiaí, losing 3-1. His maiden victory arrived in 2016 with Osasco Audax, a 2-1 win.

At Athletico Paranaense in 2018 he fell 3-1 in the Brasileirão, then with São Paulo in 2019 lost 3-0. In 2020 he drew 0-0 in the state competition and posted a notable 2-0 league success.

Against Abel Ferreira’s side he struggled, losing 3-2 with Santos in 2021 and drawing both 2022 league meetings 1-1 with Fluminense. In 2023 he claimed his only win over Abel, 2-1 in round 18, through John Kennedy and Jhon Arias, now in Palmeiras’ squad.

Since then Palmeiras have taken the last three meetings between the managers in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The most recent came in round 26 last year at Allianz Parque, where they beat Vasco da Gama 3-0.

Overall his record stands at 16 games, three wins, five draws and eight defeats, with 17 scored and 28 conceded, a 29.2% return. He now chases back-to-back wins as Corinthians manager at Neo Química Arena.
