Fernando Diniz will make his Corinthians debut against Platense in the Copa Libertadores at 21:00 on Thursday. The tie at Estadio Vicente López will be his first match in charge.
According to Meu Timao, he becomes only the third Corinthians manager to begin a tenure in a Libertadores fixture, following Osmar Loss and Vanderlei Luxemburgo.
Loss was promoted from assistant in May 2018 after Fábio Carille left for Al Wehda in Saudi Arabia. Already qualified, Corinthians hosted Millonarios on 24 May and lost 0-1. They created the better chances but were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Faríñez, then in the second half forward Carillo found the top corner past Walter.
Loss's reign ended after 25 matches, with 10 wins, five draws and 10 defeats, compounded by departures such as Balbuena.
Luxemburgo's third spell began differently in 2023. Cuca resigned after progress against Remo in the Copa do Brasil following just two games, and after a derby defeat with Danilo as interim, the club confirmed Luxemburgo's return 22 years on.
He took charge the next day, 2 May, as Corinthians were beaten 1-2 by Independiente del Valle at the Neo Química Arena. The winless sequence continued until 28 May, when they defeated Fluminense after eight games without a victory. His tenure ended in September after a Copa do Brasil exit to São Paulo and a poor first leg in the Sudamericana semi-final against Fortaleza.
