According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Fernando Hierro would become Director of La Fábrica, Real Madrid’s academy, if Enrique Riquelme wins Sunday’s presidential election.
The proposed hierarchy also features Raúl González Blanco as sporting director should Riquelme unseat Florentino Pérez, who has yet to present any names.
Hierro’s last job was at Al Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo’s team in Saudi Arabia. Since retiring he has worked largely with Spain, serving as RFEF sporting director in 2007-11, when Spain won a European Championship and a World Cup, and again in 2017-18.
He left the RFEF after stepping in as emergency coach at the 2018 World Cup, following Julen Lopetegui’s sacking by Luis Rubiales days before the tournament after his Real Madrid move became public.
As with Raúl, Hierro has not been among the legends favoured by Pérez, who oversaw his departure in 2003 alongside Vicente del Bosque. He has not worked for Madrid in the 23 years since, something that would change from Sunday if Riquelme wins.
