Marcelo Bielsa and Uruguay faced late travel disruption before tonight’s World Cup opener in Miami after an airline permitting error in Mexico delayed their departure from Cancun to Miami, FIFA said in a statement. The governing body added that the airline apologised and it worked with airport and operational partners to speed up the arrangements.

The Group H meeting with Saudi Arabia is scheduled for an 11pm kick-off.

The team’s original flight was cancelled and a second plane was required to complete the journey.

The delay meant Bielsa missed his scheduled pre-game press conference on Sunday. He spoke to the media later, after the squad arrived in America.

The Leeds United favourite downplayed the setback, saying the flight caused no problems. The Argentine previously led Leeds to promotion in 2020 and a top 10 Premier League finish.
