FIFA and the International Football Association Board intend to outlaw players covering their mouths during matches, a topic raised after Argentinian forward Prestianni racially abused Vini Jr.

Diario As reports that the measure is planned to take effect at the 2026 World Cup, with a yellow card for any player caught communicating with their face covered.

The proposal was discussed at the 140th Annual General Meeting between FIFA and IFAB in Hensol, Wales, attended by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

In the Champions League play-off first leg, Vini Jr scored Real Madrid’s winner against Benfica at Estádio da Luz, then danced by the corner flag, which was seen as a provocation. Amid Benfica protests, Prestianni covered his mouth with his shirt and shouted “mono” (monkey) at the Brazilian. Vini Jr was booked for the celebration, while Prestianni was not punished during the game.

Although there was no in-game sanction, UEFA suspended Prestianni for the return leg in Madrid. In that match, Vini Jr scored again and repeated his corner-flag dance without receiving a card.
