FIFA has approved an experimental futsal rule that targets the fly goalkeeper. Once the goalkeeper crosses into the attacking half, the ball cannot be returned to his own half by a deliberate pass, a change that could reach Portuguese futsal and affect Benfica.
According to QuattroZero, Italy’s futsal Serie A, set to be the next destination for Fits, requested permission from FIFA to run the trial.
Any infringement would result in an indirect free-kick to the opposition. The infraction is conceived as a backcourt-style violation, akin to basketball.
The trial will run in Italy in 2026/27. For now, other leading competitions will not adopt it.
Futsal has trialled rule tweaks before. Spain previously tested taking kick-ins with the hand rather than the foot, a step not yet attempted in Portugal.
