FIFA has extended UEFA’s six-match suspension of Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni to apply worldwide.

A FIFA spokesperson told Reuters the disciplinary committee has implemented the UEFA ban globally under article 70 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. UEFA requested the extension.

UEFA’s punishment followed homophobic conduct towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during February’s Champions League play-off first leg, which Madrid won 1-0. Prestianni was initially accused of racist abuse, then said he had used a homophobic slur instead.

The World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July. With a six-match suspension in force, Prestianni would miss Argentina’s opening two fixtures if selected.

The 20-year-old has limited senior international experience, with one cap. He played only a few late minutes in a 2-0 friendly win against Angola in November 2025.

Argentina, the reigning world champions, are in Group J. They open against Algeria on 17 June at three am, then face Austria on 22 June at seven pm and Jordan on 28 June at four am.
