FIFA has opened a disciplinary case into Argentina’s federation and players after Spain’s 1-0 World Cup final win, with Thiago Almada among those under review.

The Athletic reports that the inquiry covers unsporting conduct, assaults, political demonstrations and abusive fan behaviour across the tournament, including the MetLife Stadium fracas. The Asociación del Fútbol Argentino is also under investigation for alleged non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, discrimination or racial abuse, and failures to maintain order and safety.

Those under scrutiny include Leandro Paredes, cited for three alleged assaults, Molina for two, assistant Roberto Ayala for one, and Almada for unsporting conduct. Spain’s Gavi is also being monitored.

After the final whistle a brawl erupted on the pitch. Paredes and Almada confronted Gavi and Eric Garcia, with footage showing Argentine players flooring the Spaniards. Referee Slavko Vinčić dismissed only Paredes at the time.

Flamengo are in talks to sign Almada from Atlético de Madrid. Before the 1-1 draw with Internacional on Wednesday 29, José Boto voiced his optimism.

“He is a player who interests us and we are working on it. It is not an easy signing for several reasons, but we are working and I am confident we will get it done,” he told Prime Video.

“Talking is easy, doing is harder. In negotiations we aim for the best conditions, and often we need time and patience. It is obvious that the fans and the coach want the player here, but he will be here when it is possible.”
