More than seven million hateful or harmful social media comments targeting players and team staff have been detected during the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA’s SMPS said on Saturday it had identified the abuse while the tournament is still ongoing. The third-place play-off is France v England on Saturday at 23:00, with Spain facing Argentina in Sunday’s final at 21:00.

The total is 14 times higher than in 2022, when about 470,000 posts were removed from platforms.

More than 1,000 online threats have been referred to authorities, including law enforcement.

Since the start of the tournament, more than 53 million posts and comments have been moderated, with a possible peak still to come after the final.
