FIFA sets Club World Cup dates, tight schedule for Libertadores winners

São Paulo has learned the dates for the path it might take in the Intercontinental Cup, the former Club World Cup, at the end of this season, if it becomes the champion of the Copa Libertadores.

FIFA announced the dates for the competition, which will be the first after the new Club World Cup, taking place between June and July in the United States.

Of the six continental representatives, five are already defined, with only South America left to determine its champion. The Libertadores will enter its quarter-final stage this month, when São Paulo faces LDU from Ecuador in two matches, deciding at Morumbi.

PSG (Europe), Cruz Azul (North and Central America), Al-Ahli (Asia), Pyramids (Africa), and Auckland City (Oceania) are guaranteed in the Intercontinental Cup organized by FIFA, which will have well-spaced games, starting this coming September 14, with the grand final on December 17.

The three matches of the final stages of the World Cup do not yet have a defined venue by the entity, which only announced where the initial games already decided will be: Pyramids vs. Auckland City will be hosted by the Africans in Cairo, Egypt. The duel between Al-Ahli vs. the winner of Pyramids vs. Auckland will take place in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

If São Paulo wins the Libertadores for the fourth time, it will also have to chase another world title. The debut of the South American representative will be against Cruz Azul from Mexico on December 10, only three days after the end of the Brazilian Championship, which has already been brought forward by the CBF to avoid further date conflicts with the Intercontinental.

If the Tricolor secures the spot, the path towards the fourth world title includes three confrontations. First, there's a duel against the Mexican team, and if they advance, they face in the semifinal the winner of the matches between Africans, Asians, and Oceanians. Finally, in the decision, PSG, the last Champions League champion, is already waiting.
