According to Globo.com, Fifa will cover Piquerez’s salary at Palmeiras during his recovery, after the left-back suffered a left ankle ligament rupture on Uruguay duty.
The payment is full, so Palmeiras will not bear his wages until he returns. The club has not disclosed a recovery timeframe, though there is an expectation he could be back before the World Cup.
That prospect was among the reasons player and club chose surgery.
He was injured in Friday’s friendly between Uruguay and England at Wembley, left the pitch on a stretcher and flew back to Brazil the following day. Since then he has been under the care of Palmeiras’ medical department.
He will miss the next Alviverde fixture on Thursday against Grêmio at Arena Crefisa Barueri, kick-off 21:30.
Fifa compensates clubs when players return injured from national team duty, with payments starting on the 29th day of absence after a minimum 28-day lay-off. Palmeiras contacted Uruguay’s medical staff, then notified Fifa to activate the process.
The daily cap is 20,000 euros, about R$ 120,000, and the maximum payout is 7.5 million euros, R$ 45 million, for six-month absences. Fifa allocates 80 million euros per year for this scheme.
Brazilian clubs have benefited before, including Flamengo when Pedro was injured with the Seleção in 2024. Palmeiras were also indemnified for Fernando Prass after his elbow injury at the Rio 2016 Olympics, which required surgery and kept him out for three months.
