The FIFA World Cup returns in 2026 and, for the first time ever, will take place across three host nations - the United States, Mexico and Canada. This tournament promises more teams, more games and more excitement than ever before.

The FIFA World Cup will have a new format for 2026 and will now feature 48 teams, 104 matches, 4 more groups and an additional knockout round so teams will have to win even more matches to lift that coveted trophy. The revised format was introduced to ensure fair play, with all teams playing a minimum of three matches and providing balanced rest time between competing teams.

For the first time ever, three countries will co-host the World Cup, and 16 cities spread across North America will welcome both fans and nations:

Now let's take a look at the groups for the World Cup, the draw having been made on Saturday 6th December.

The 48 teams were drawn into 12 groups of four.

This will actually be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams after expanding from 32 in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The groups are as follows:

The top two teams from each group and eight best third-place teams from across all groups will progress to the Round of 32.

Where can I watch the matches?

For UK audiences, the BBC and ITV will share the coverage of some of the biggest fixtures, all the way from the high-stakes group matches to the unmissable drama of the final. ITV will air England's first match of the tournament against Croatia (17th June), England v Panama (27th June) and Scotland v Morocco (19th June).

The BBC will show England v Ghana (23rd June) along with three of their knockout clashes in the round of 32, round of 16 and the semi-final- if they progress.

The final will be shown live on both ITV and BBC, so you can take your pick of where to watch it!

Spain and England top the FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament odds

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup getting closer, betting markets are already available on Betfair Sportsbook and the Betfair Exchange, giving fans plenty of ways to get involved before the tournament kicks off.
