The Italian national team is seeking a major reform and it can’t get better than appointing Pep Guardiola. Initial contact for the Spaniard was made and FIGC president Giovanni Malago has now confirmed the approach, while offering more details.

The Italian spoke to Cronache di Spogliatoio – via Sportmediaset, revealing that they want to keep a communication channel open for Guardiola.

He said, confirming interest:

“I think it was right and important to open a dialogue and keep it alive.”

“It’s absolutely not a lack of respect or consideration for other candidates, because discussions have already begun on other names, and then one can opt for someone who perhaps belongs to a more recent generational school, so to speak, and the issue there is highly subjective.”

Malago also made it clear that FIGC will make financial exceptions for Guardiola and finances are unlikely to be a problem for his appointment.

“Exceptions have been made, exceptions that, for example, concern the name that’s so dominant at the moment: Pep Guardiola. Exceptions for obvious reasons that I won’t go into here, but it’s not a given that this will happen.”

At the same time, Malago revealed other names also remain in the picture: “Absolutely not. We’re thinking about a certain profile, and these names certainly fall into that category.”
