Filipe Luís explains Lucas Paquetá's role at Flamengo and intended position | OneFootball

After the win over Vitória, Flamengo head coach Filipe Luís clarified that Lucas Paquetá is being used as a midfielder rather than a winger.

According to Coluna Do Fla, Flamengo signed Paquetá from West Ham at the end of last month for €42 million, a record fee for any club in the Americas.

Filipe Luís said Paquetá defends in wide areas but operates as a midfielder, mirroring his interior duties at West Ham. With Emerson Royal on that flank and two holding midfielders side by side, the team needed a creator rather than another holder, so Paquetá was chosen in midfield.

Paquetá has yet to deliver standout displays for Flamengo. He has been used on the second line and occasionally wide as he adapts, and the coach says he was brought in to play ahead of the holding midfielders.

With Paquetá available, focus now turns from the Brasileirão to the Campeonato Carioca. Flamengo face Botafogo on Sunday 15 at 17:30, Brasília time, at Estádio Nilton Santos in the quarter-finals.
