Arriving at Flamengo as a player, Filipe Luis quickly moved into coaching and delivered immediate success. He earned the dressing room’s trust and set clear ideas on and off the pitch.

According to L'Équipe, the future Monaco coach saw his first-team tenure end in March after 100 matches and five trophies, while his bond with the Rio club ran to almost seven years.

After spells at Atlético Madrid and Chelsea, he returned in 2019 to Flamengo. The club spent months persuading him, promising a post-playing role in the academy.

He worked towards his badges and sought advice from mentors such as Miguel Angel Lotina. Retiring in December 2023, he led the under-17s and paid part of assistant Ivan Palanco’s salary.

Six months later he stepped up to the under-20s, winning the Intercontinental Cup with a 2-1 victory over Olympiakos. In October 2024 he moved to the senior side.

With an asymmetrical four-two-three-one, a wish to defend with the ball and limit transitions, plus plain speaking, results followed. Flamengo lifted multiple titles in 14 months, beat Chelsea 3-1 at the Club World Cup, and drew 1-1 with PSG before a 2-1 penalty shootout defeat in the Intercontinental Cup.

He extended his deal in late December but was not the preferred option for president Luiz Eduardo Baptista. After defeats in the Recopa and Brazil Super Cup, he was dismissed two months later. Tributes from senior players, including Giorgian De Arrascaeta, underlined the respect he commanded.
