As Filipe Luis takes charge at AS Monaco, two former colleagues recall a curious, observant professional with strong values.

According to Nice-Matin, Julien Escudé and Christophe Lollichon, who knew him at Ajax and Chelsea, see a promising and principled young coach.

Escudé first met him at Ajax in 2004-2005, then 19, recalling a polite, intelligent and curious youngster. They met again in Spain and kept in touch, with Luis later providing Chelsea tickets.

Escudé notes competition with Maxwell made Ajax poor timing. He calls Luis professional and discreet, keen to understand training. Returning to Flamengo late on was, he says, smart, easing a first step as a young coach after results and careful staffing.

Lollichon worked with him in 2014-2015 at Chelsea and found him approachable and talkative. He recalls shared meals and an open mind. Luis, he says, watched closely, a trait common to future managers, and his first coaching move helped him be noticed by European clubs.

Lollichon considers Monaco a sensible fit and does not expect Luis to be surprised by European football. Escudé adds that choices follow opportunities and instinct. France is not an easy call for someone new to the league, yet Monaco’s history appeals and the job could be a springboard for a 40-year-old increasingly respected, having won things.
