Filipe Luis has been appointed AS Monaco head coach on a contract to June 2028, replacing Sébastien Pocognoli.
According to Le Progres, the 40-year-old was a free agent after Flamengo dismissed him on 3 March. Monaco sacked Pocognoli on 1 June.
He left amid disagreements with the president and a dip in results, with Flamengo 11th in the league at the time.
He won the 2024 Copa do Brasil, the 2025 Supercopa do Brasil, the 2025 Campeonato Carioca, the 2025 Brazilian title and the 2025 Copa Libertadores. His two-season record was 62 wins, 21 draws and 16 defeats.
As a player he won La Liga and the Copa del Rey with Atletico Madrid, reached a Champions League final and lifted the Europa League twice. He won the Premier League with Chelsea, and with Brazil earned 44 caps, winning the 2019 Copa America and 2013 Confederations Cup.
This is his first coaching job in Europe. He will be joined by assistant Ivan Palanco and fitness coach Diogo Linhares, both of whom worked with him at Flamengo.
Antony Santiago, formerly head of tactical analysis, is promoted to assistant, while Jyri Nieminen is goalkeeping coach. He has already faced French opposition as a coach, losing December’s Intercontinental Cup final to PSG after 1-1, then 2-1 on penalties.
